Vikki's story

“The work is varied and every day is a learning curve”

After undertaking work experience in a care home kitchen, Vikki knew caring for others was the job for her. When the opportunity to become a CHAP came along Vikki jumped at the chance to enhance her skills.

Vikki says:

“I first began in 2004 as a work experience student in the kitchen of a Four Seasons care home where I became increasingly interested in care and as I interacted with residents and family members I realised that I would like to continue working for FSHC as a Care Assistant.

I then enrolled in a Health and Social Care course in my local college and gained experience and knowledge to help me to try and provide a high standard of care alongside the training provided by FSHC.

Apart from the residents and families’ funny stories and words of wisdom, I mostly enjoy being part of the team which is almost like having another family. I get great job satisfaction knowing that we can make a difference in a person’s life. Although there are some harder aspects to the job we always try to enhance a person’s experience and I love to be part of that experience.

The CHAP role appealed to me as I seen it as a great opportunity to expand my learning and I like a challenge. I enjoy providing care from a more holistic point of view, the variety of work I can do –every day is a learning curve.

The application process was quite straight forward. The assessment and interview process were intense but the CHAPter 1 programme on e-learning provided me with a lot of information that I found useful. The programme required long hours from both myself and my mentor to make sure you have all the right knowledge but there’s lots of support and I learnt a lot from the experience.

To someone who is thinking of becoming a CHAP I’d say you need to be 100% committed to learning and following it through to the end as it is a great position and Four Seasons supports you all the way. I would also say that it is a wonderful opportunity to enhance their career and knowledge.”
