Yvonne's story

“The end goal is worth its weight in gold”

Yvonne started her journey in care as a domestic assistant and quickly worked her way up to Care Assistant and Senior Care Assistant, while completing her NVQ2 and NVQ3 in Health and Social Care qualifications and raising her new-born son.

In 2015 Yvonne successfully applied to the CHAP role and since qualifying has completed her a Level 5 qualification in Leadership and Management and even won our Regional CHAP care award.

Yvonne says:

“The CHAP role gave me more responsibility and the chance to progress within my career. I learned problem solving skills, multi-tasking, training other members of staff and being more involved with residents and their ever changing medical needs.

Although the application and training process can be nerve-wracking and sometimes tough, it’s also exciting and in-depth to ensure you have the knowledge and skills required to give residents a high standard of care.

To people thinking about becoming a CHAP I’d say you need to have patience and time to dedicate to the course, to understand that you will need support from the nurses and that although there is a lot to learn, the end goal is worth its weight in gold.

There’s lots of support and the graduation ceremony is an acknowledgment of all of your hard work. It’s a time for all of the CHAPs to come together and celebrate completing their training. You can meet with other CHAPs who are at the same point in their career so you do not feel alone or nervous at the start of this new chapter in your life.

One of my proudest moments was winning the Regional CHAP Care Award which I have been nominated for again this year. Also when an outside professional visited the home he was so impressed my work that he nominated me for a ROCK award (Recognition of Care and Kindness). Both of these gave me confidence in myself and confirmed that I am capable of this role, and more.

I’m now taking the next step in my career by becoming a CHAP Facilitator. I‘m excited to see what this role involves, the knowledge it will teach me and where it could take me in the future while having the opportunity to work alongside the CHAP Team. At the beginning of my career journey working within the care setting I never imagined getting to this point. I started my career with no qualifications to my name, and with dedication and hard work it has paid off.”
