Join our team of CHAPs.
Release your potential and develop your clinical skills, confidence and career in care.
As a Care Home Assistant Practitioner (CHAP), you’ll combine your caring activities with an extended range of clinical skills, supporting our nurses to deliver the best care to residents in our homes.
The hands-on role includes skills such as administering medication, taking blood pressure, simple wound dressings and putting care plans into practice. As the link between our nursing and care teams, our CHAP programme empowers you to confidently develop your leadership skills.
What is a CHAP?
Feeling supported
You’ll receive dedicated training from an experienced registered nurse who will mentor you throughout the CHAP programme (up to 6 months) using effective coaching techniques and supervision. Reflecting on practice to expand your learning is also encouraged throughout the programme and after qualifying.
You can also speak to other CHAPs though our e-leaning forum SOAR and at regular meetings. Our team of CHAP leads are always on hand to offer guidance and advice, while you can feel reassured that the CHAP Programme is governed through the CHAP Board, meaning that you will only be asked to carry out duties that you have been trained as competent to do.
Support for CHAPs
There are a range of training routes available allowing you to tailor the programme to your interests, prior knowledge and skills. On successful completion of the programme qualified CHAPs attend a graduation ceremony to celebrate your achievement and welcome you to your new role.
Listen to some of our CHAPs’ experiences here, as they talk about their journey.
To apply you’ll need:
- 12 months experience as a Care Assistant
- Qualified to Level 2, preferably in Health and Social Care or English and Maths
- Willing to complete a Level 3 qualification in Health and Social Care within 15 months of completing the CHAP Programme (if not already achieved)
- Some leadership/mentoring skills, for example, supporting a new Care Assistant within induction.
- Great ‘can do’ attitude
- Be caring and respectful
- Good communication, organisation and observational skills
